A warm welcome to our new Reception starters for September 2020

Dear Parents/Carers,

I am delighted that your child will be starting their Reception year at St Mary’s in September, and our whole team are looking forward to working with you and your family.

We would normally now be sending you lots of dates and information about September and all the procedures about starting school.  However, we are obviously in a very different time at the moment and need to adapt the way that we will be working with you.

Mrs Weaver (our Head of School), Mrs Corbett (our Early Years Leader) and myself (Executive Headteacher) have come up with a plan which we hope will give you the opportunity to meet the team, get the information you need for your child to start school and also open a communication channel so you are able to ask us any questions and to keep in touch.

Being part of St Mary’s is very much being part of a special community and we will continue to consider the best ways to help you become, or continue to be, part of the St Mary’s family.

We are planning virtual introductions to help you ‘meet’ the key staff who will be part of your child’s first year at school.  We recognise that for some families that this can be an anxious time, and we want to use the next couple of months to ensure you feel prepared and confident about school.

There are two ‘normal’ parts of the transition into school that we feel are particularly important; the initial meeting for parents, to find out about the school and meet key staff, and the home visits which are an opportunity for families to meet the class teacher and teaching assistant and begin to build the relationship which will be an important part of your child’s first year in school.

So, here is our plan for the next few weeks:

  • During half term – week beginning 25th May – you will receive your new starter pack.  This will have information about the start of school and lots of forms(!) which we will need to be completed over the next few weeks.
  • Week beginning the 1st June, we will have a dedicated section of our website for the families of our new starters.  On these pages we will have all the information in one place so you are able to find it easily.  We will also have virtual introductions from all the key staff so you will be able to put a name to a face.
  • During the same week (1st June), Mrs Corbett will have set up a closed Facebook page just for parents of our new starters.  We would like to use this as a further opportunity for us to communicate but also for parents to begin to communicate with each other too.
  • Also in this week (a busy week!!), we will contact you to set up a virtual meeting with you on Zoom.  We will ask you to choose a time which would work for your family and these meetings will give you an opportunity to clarify any of the information you will have been given and to meet your child’s class teacher and teaching assistant (TA).  The Zoom meetings will take place during the week beginning 8th June.
  • School uniform is an important part of our school.  Trousers, skirts and white polo shirts can be purchased at any of the super markets.  If you would like a branded item such as a jumper, cardigan or fleece, we will be arranging a few dates in June for you to come to school to look at the uniform and try it on and order what you will need for September.  You will also be able to purchase book bags and PE bags which are very useful for the children starting school and we would recommend the children have them.  If you would rather just order the uniform rather than coming into school, we will be giving you further information in the packs that come out to you.

We are anticipating (and hoping) that schools will be open normally in September.  Although, the new school year begins on Tuesday 1st September, the first two days will be training days to plan further the curriculum for your children.

We have split the children into two groups – A & B.  Children in group A will attend school all day on Thursday 3rd September. Children in group B will attend school all day on Friday 4th September.  On Monday 7th September, all the children will be in school (and for every day until they are 18 years old!!).  All this information will be in the packs.

In the meantime, if you have any further questions, please contact one of the team who will be able to help you:
