  • Respond to a variety of physical challenges
  • Focus on improving aspects of own performance
  • Discover their own aptitudes and preferences
  • Understand the need for exercise in their lives
  • Develop positive attitudes to participation in physical activity

Teaching and Learning

Children at St Mary’s experience a breadth of sporting activities. Each class is taught field, striking, gymnastic and dance skills throughout the year and their learning is enhanced by a range of professional coaches teaching the children alongside the teacher.

Children learn to swim in the middle phase and our Year 2 children go ice skating.  Physical Education is not just provided during lesson time. St Marys ’s also offers a range of extra curriculum sports clubs, which have included cricket, dance, football, circuits, rounders, netball and tennis.

Sport coaches, trained members of staff and class teachers prepare children for both inter and intra school competitions. The school works closely with Fortius P.E. to ensure that a range of competitions are provided throughout the year. During assemblies, we celebrate sporting success outside of school, fuelling the children’s ambition to persevere.
