Languages Curriculum

St Mary’s believe that the learning of a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience that promotes children’s curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world we live in. Pupils are encouraged to develop communication and literacy skills that lay the foundation for future language learning.

Aims

At St Mary’s we aim for all pupils to:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language using a variety of authentic sources
  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, find ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improve the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using a variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied
  • approach the learning of languages with enthusiasm and confidence

Teaching and Learning

Children are taught to enjoy French from Year 3 upwards, although they may encounter some additional languages spoken in Key Stage 1. We use a range of speaking activities, ICT, games, songs and drama to help the children acquire speaking and listening skills and we encourage them to take part in conversations with each other and adults. Whenever possible, they are encouraged to read and write the language to support their communication skills and have access to a well-resourced library offering a range of French fiction and non-fiction including dictionaries. In addition, languages, including French, are celebrated as part of whole school assemblies during which children develop their confidence in speaking to an audience through poetry and song.
