Geography

At St. Marys, Geography lessons equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with developing an understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. The varied topics taught will develop in all children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

Aims

  • To promote a cross curricular skills based approach to studying geography.
  • To develop a range of geographical knowledge and understanding.
  • To develop and use geographical enquiry skills through the use of ICT, field work, secondary sources and by using and making maps.
  • To be able to interpret a range of information from a variety of sources including maps, diagrams, globes and aerial photographs.
  • To develop the ability to communicate and record findings in a variety of ways.

Teaching and Learning

Children are taught Geography through a variety of exciting topics, based around the Cornerstones Curriculum.  We use a range of teaching strategies throughout the year groups such as whole class, small group and partner work. Learning outcomes are planned to ensure all pupils have access to the learning. The children are given a range of opportunities in order to develop and extend their geographical knowledge and understanding. Primary and secondary sources are used when researching including the use of ICT, field work and maps. The children record their learning in topic books from Year 6 to Year 2 and in Year 1 they have beautiful floor books.
