“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up” (Picasso)

At St. Mary’s we believe that every child is an artist and we seek to harness and promote the creativity of our children through art across the curriculum. Pupils are given opportunities to express ideas in alternative ways to the written word. We encourage each child to experiment with a range of media and to learn appropriate techniques in order that they may enjoy the practice and appreciation of Art. We also teach the children about famous artists.

Aims

  • Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Teaching and Learning

At St. Mary’s, we use a variety of teaching and learning styles in Art and Design lessons, with our principal aim being to develop the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding. We ensure that children have the opportunity to investigate, explore and develop ideas as well as evaluate, revisit and improve their work. We do, where applicable, teach alongside topics. We strive to provide opportunities for children to flourish with an Art Week dedicated to Art and DT. The children are encouraged to evaluate their own ideas and methods, as well as evaluate the work of others, including artists, and say what they think and feel about them.

The children also have opportunities to use a wide range of materials, tools and techniques, including ICT.
