Religious Education

Our Section 48 (RE) Report graded the school as ‘OUTSTANDING’ in every area –  a report that we are also most proud of.   The diocesan inspectors noted that:

‘This is a school where pupils joyfully live out their mission statement, seeing Jesus as the role model for all that they think, say and do within school so that their lives are a living witness to the Gospel. Pupils participate wholeheartedly in all school activities, are respectful to others and are immensely welcoming. The strong Catholic ethos underpins and permeates every aspect of school life as evidenced daily in the relationships between staff, pupils, parents and governors. There is a strong sense of everyone growing in faith together. Pupils are hugely proud of this exceptional Catholic school and take full advantage of the many opportunities it provides to enable them to develop in their faith.’

RE Curriculum

In Religious Education, St Mary's Catholic Primary School has adopted the scheme of work written by the Department of School and Colleges at Clifton Diocese.  Religious Education of our pupils not only imparts knowledge as the pupils learn about their Faith, but also deepens their relationship and friendship with God.  This is done through deepening prayer.  Christian Meditation is a daily occurrence at 1pm each day, with the length of meditation decided by the chronological age.  For example, Foundation Stage pupils will meditate for up to four minutes with Year 6 pupils mediating for up to ten minutes.  Throughout this period of profound silence, the mantra 'Maranatha' is repeated silently in the heart.  This word is an ancient Aramaic word meaning, 'Come Lord'.

Nurturing Human Wholeness

St Mary's have adopted the programme 'Nurturing Human Wholeness' to further enhance the distinctive Catholic nature of our school.  Each week there is a Statement of Belief in which Catholic principles are rooted.  These are supported by and linked to PSHE objectives, to the work of CAFOD and our RE scheme of work.

Each Tuesday and Wednesday every class in turn has the opportunity to lead us in worship through prayers, Scripture and hymns.  It is a chance for our children to create and guide us through our weekly statements.  

On Monday, Mr Henstridge introduces the Statement of the Week with the whole school, along with the Weekly Reading and on Friday, there is an opportunity for children to consolidate the Statement of the Week through their class assembly.

Relationships and Sex Education

A Journey in Love is a resource created by Sister Jude Groden of BRES.  It is the recommended programme of study for Catholic schools for Relationship  and Sex Education, and has been written as a progressive scheme of work that supports the Religious Education, PSHE and Science curricula taught within the school.

Other Faiths

Community cohesion is central to our Christian faith and we value the rich and diverse community of St Mary's. We are committed to developing an ethos of respect for other faiths and welcome the contribution made by those of other religious beliefs. Through our curriculum, the children learn about the beliefs and rituals of Judaism, Hinduism and Islam and we provide opportunities to recognise other religious festivals throughout the year. Our outward looking and inclusive philosophy fosters an understanding of the many blessings of the world around us.
